Advocating for change

What if you could be confident that...

  • If you were concerned about memory problems, you could get an accurate diagnosis in a timely way?
  • When you receive a diagnosis of dementia, you and your family have access to the care and support you need – when and where you need it?
  • When your family member or friends with dementia moves into a care facility, they would receive a high quality of individualized and person-centred care from knowledgeable care providers?

Help make B.C. a leader in dementia care

All you need to do to help make B.C. a leader in dementia care is become an Alzheimer Advocate and speak up!

More than 70,000 British Columbians have Alzheimer’s disease or a related form of dementia – a number that’s increasing as the population ages.

However, because people like you have shared their stories or experiences and made time to connect with decision-makers in your community, attention to dementia care in B.C. has changed dramatically over the last decade.

Why it’s important

A person who’s been diagnosed with dementia will require care over a long period of time – sometimes decades. The impact on families, communities and our health resources is significant, yet with a coordinated provincial approach, here in B.C. we can maximize the value of our health care system.

With your help, we can educate decision-makers about how to deliver high quality care where and when it is needed. By focusing on our key issues, we can improve the dementia journey for individuals and families, and decrease the per person cost through deliberate action.

The Alzheimer Society’s advocacy efforts are aimed at changing or influencing individual behaviour, public opinion, and government policy or law. As an Alzheimer Advocate, you can join us by speaking up about the disease, drawing the public’s attention to this important issue, and directing decision-makers towards a solution.

What is an Alzheimer Advocate?

An Alzheimer Advocate is someone exactly like you!

Advocates are people who have been diagnosed with dementia, are care partners, or friends who support a person with dementia.

All you have to do is raise your voice – by talking, or simply writing a letter.

We can help you get started...
