Help make B.C. a leader in dementia care

More than 70,000 British Columbians have Alzheimer’s disease or a related form of dementia – a number that’s increasing as the population ages.

However, attention to dementia care in B.C. has changed dramatically over the last decade.

Because people like you have shared their stories or experiences and made time to connect with decision-makers, we continue to make a difference by keeping dementia on the agenda!

While he doesn't have a stated position on dementia care, new Minister of Healh Services Kevin Falcon said in a recent interview with the Vancouver Sun that he thinks we need to change the status quo for healthcare in B.C.

"That is really what I hope to bring to the table, a willingness to really look at everything we're doing and trying to determine whether there are lessons to be learned either in other provinces or around the world that we can adopt in British Columbia to deliver better patient care and hopefully manage the costs more successfully than we have thus far."

Election 2009 - Thank you for speaking out!

Thank you to everyone who spoke out during the election by contacting their local candidates to raise awareness of dementia in B.C.

Whether you sent an e-mail, wrote a letter, or took a few moments to share your story in person or by phone, every voice helps make a difference and keep dementia care a priority!

Many candidates responded, indicating either their interest in or connection to Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

Get to know the issues

The Alzheimer Society of B.C. has three key areas that we're focused on in our work with government:
  • Implementation of the Dementia Service Framework, a blueprint that sets out a vision: that people living with dementia will lead full lives, through a shared passion for action by all stakeholders.
  • To change the culture of care in residential care.
  • To include people with dementia in end-of-life programs.

What is an Alzheimer Advocate?

An Alzheimer Advocate is someone exactly like you!

Advocates are people who have been diagnosed with dementia, are care partners, or friends who support a person with dementia.

All you have to do is raise your voice – by talking, or simply writing a letter.
